Another Maine Motorcycle Crash Ends in Biker’s Death
August 3, 2010
Another fatal motorcycle accident occurred in Maine yesterday afternoon, just hours apart from the motorcycle crash in which a 40-year-old man died and a 45-year-old Melrose woman was seriously injured.
In this case, the accident happened between a car and a motorcycle in Lewiston, ME. The outcome was the same: 1 man died and 1 woman was injured.
Police said the fatal crash happened after 6 pm on Lisbon Street in front of Kentucky Fried Chicken in Lewiston, when a senior driver pulling her Subaru out of the KFC parking lot onto Lisbon Street was hit by a man on a blue Yamaha motorcycle.

As in almost all instances when a car and a motorcycle collide, the motorcyclist was the one that suffered the greatest injury. The biker died at the scene. He was wearing a helmet, which was found a few feet away from him. The crash must have knocked it off.
The man has still not been positively identified, police said.
The driver, an elderly woman also suffered in the crash. She was injured and taken to a hospital by ambulance.
According to witnesses, the motorcycle was heard going fast before the crash. The sound of the crash was so loud, “it sounded like a cement truck hit a building,” a woman who lives in a nearby building said.
The woman, Sandra Nelligan, said she came out of her home to see what has happened and saw the man lying on his stomach on the ground. The woman in the Subaru sedan was slumped and appeared unconscious, Nelligan said.
According to Nelligan the man appeared to be in his late 20s or early 30s.
The accident remains under investigation.

The motorcyclist was my brother in law and it hurts to read all these reports, I just found out yesterday and everything keeps saying it’s his fault just cause he was on a motorcycle. The fact that he had a helmet on shows that he was a responsible rider and this accident is just all around tragic.
Another case of reporting an incident where an elderly driver pulls out into traffic without being sure it’s clear and the victim is blamed for his own death. We had a similar incident herelast year. Elderly driver pulls a left turn in front of an oncoming cycle, then is upset that the police want to pull her license. Instead of blaming the victims, this paper should be pushing for periodic and stringent driver testing of senior citizens. Oh wait… that would tread on their “rights”…
(PS Driving is not a right, it is a state granted privilage you can lose. Ask a drunk driver…)
Keeping Us Safe has developed the “Enhanced Self-Assessment Program” for senior drivers.
This individualized program has been designed to serve as a valuable tool in helping older drivers (and their families) make appropriate decisions regarding the future of ones safe driving career.
If the individual is a safe driver, we provide him or her with strategies on how to remain a safe driver as they progress through the aging process.
If driving retirement is the appropriate decision, then we provide the individual (and their family) with acceptable alternatives, resources and a very specific plan to ensure a smooth and successful transition from the drivers seat to the passenger seat.
We also offer two separate presentations for your group or organization:
- A Safe Drive Through the Aging Process, and
- Adults with Aging Parent Drivers

The elderly driver was my former mother-in-law, Lilliane Morin, age 75. The family removed her from life support at CMMC the day following the crash. She had been getting something to eat after spending the day with her ailing husband at the hospital. Let us not rush to judgment about anyone. Thank you.
Bottom line 2 people paid with their lives. If anything I feel for the families and friends that lost their loved ones due to this accident. Whether the man was speeding on his motorcycle or the woman pulling out onto the road doesn’t matter who was at fault, accidents happen and to blame the woman, being a senior citizen if absouletly absurd. I have seen teenagers and young adults drive more erratic than the elderly. Fingerpointing at the senior citizen is a lame and poor judgement. Who are you to judge?
It was a horrible accident that took two lives. That of my Aunt and that of a young man. We cannot change what happend, but maybe laws regarding those types of motorcycles should be changed. A crotch rocket as they call them is more of a racing bike than transportation. Most motorcyclists are very conscience when riding. But everytime I have seen this bike on the road, the rider is almost always going too fast and weaving in and out of traffic. Get them off the road.
