Cape Cod Biker Dies in Crash
August 9, 2010

Another motorcycle accident ended tragically for a Massachusetts resident and biker this summer, when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck in Falmouth on Friday.

News reports said that the 52-year-old motorcyclist, Alan Hurwitz, of East Falmouth, died of his injuries sustained in the Friday morning crash.

According to police, the accident occurred at the intersection of Turner Road and Thomas B. Landers Road in Falmouth as Hurwitz attempted to make a left turn from Turner Rd onto Thomas B. Landers Rd (see the map below).

Cape Cod Times reported that his motorcycle crossed the yellow line and crashed into an oversized pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction. Hurwitz sustained fatal injuries even though was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Hurwitz was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston by a MedFlight helicopter, but he died at the hospital a few hours later.

We are saddened by this loss of yet another motorcyclist’s life this summer. There have been so many crashes these past few months… it’s overwhelming - single-motorcycle accidents, motorcycle-car collisions, crashes with two or more bikes, crashes with pick up trucks and even crashes with deer.

Each accident is different, and their causes are different, but what connects them all is the vulnerability of motorcyclists in crashes. Riders can get thrown off their motorcycles, their helmets can get knocked off their heads in the impact, arms and legs get broken, and even if they escape death, the chances of injury in motorcyclists are higher than motorists involved in the crash. So, it’s no wonder we urge everyone, motorcyclists and motorists alike, to exercise caution and awareness of others on the road.

Tragically, a man’s life was lost in another motorcycle crash, and until we know all the details behind it we do not mean to judge anyone. We can only send our condolences to the family of Alan Hurwitz hoping they will find solace in their grief.
