Motorcyclist Crushed Between 2 Cars on I-93

Thomas Young, 39, of Manchester, NH was struck by another car while stopped on his motorcycle on an I-93 exit ramp in Londonderry, NH this past Monday afternoon and was caught in between two vehicles. According to The Eagle Tribune, Young’s Kawasaki Nomad was struck from behind by Sean Bibeau, 21, of Derry, NH when Bibeau failed to stop his Mitsubishi Lancer in time on the Exit 5 ramp behind Young. The impact from Bibeau’s vehicle pushed Young’s motorcycle into the Dodge Neon in front of him, which was operated by Ilyssa Sherman, 20, of East Hampstead, NH.

None of the parties involved were seriously injured in this motorcycle accident, which occurred around 3:00pm that day. Young was reportedly wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was taken to an area hospital as a precaution. Officials are not charging Bibeau for causing the crash.

How Safe are the Roads in Your State?

According to FARS data from the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some states rank higher or lower for road safety when it comes to drunk drivers.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of the dangers of drunk driving, has an interactive map on its website where you can find out how your state ranks for traffic deaths involving a DUI driver.

MADD How Safe Is Your State

According to the map, the safest state (ranking 1) has the lowest percentage of DUI related deaths in 2009. Hawaii (ranked 51) and Connecticut (50) are the least safe states to drive through when it comes to DUI related deaths in 2009.

Massachusetts, ranked at 31, is not that great either. Compared to New Hampshire (ranked 9), it still has a long way to go to prevent drunken driving accidents.

Statistics for Massachusetts

  • DUI Fatalities: 108, which is 32% of the total traffic deaths
  • 3 time DUI offenders: 22,253;
  • 5 time DUI offenders: 4,840

One of the ways to curb drunk driving in Massachusetts is to make the repeat offender interlock law mandatory for all offenders.

Statistics for New Hampshire
There were 30 DUI fatalities in 2009, which is 27% of the total traffic deaths in New Hampshire. This is a 33% decline for the alcohol-related accident fatalities from the previous year.

MADD is currently working to require ignition interlocks for all convicted drunk drivers.

What Happens After a Motorcycle Crash?

There have been 3 fatal motorcycle accidents in Massachusetts within the past couple of weeks. A Milford man was killed on I-290 when he lost control of his bike and crashed into a highway sign and an unidentified woman died in a motorized scooter accident in Roxbury after she also lost control. A Haverhill father was fatally injured when he crashed into a tree, just down the street from his home.

These tragedies remind us all too often that motorcycle accidents can happen to anyone and at anytime and that no one is invincible from them. We’ve all seen pictures or videos on the news of the aftermath of a crash scene and know that it’s something we try to avoid every time we get behind the handlebars.

What Makes Motorcycle Accidents Dangerous?
Motorcyclists are at a significantly higher risk of getting injured in the event of an accident than individuals in a car or truck. Here are few reasons why:

  • The design of motorcycles leaves riders and passengers completely exposed to the elements and to greater harm in an accident simply because there is no added layer of protection for riders
  • Bikers are not as noticeable or visible to both pedestrians and drivers
  • Motorcycles have 2 wheels, cars have 4 and this is a critical difference. Bikes don’t and really can’t give a rider as much stability and safety as other motor vehicles can

Motorcycle Accident Injuries
The two most damaging motorcycle injuries that a biker can experience in a motorcycle accident are head injuries and spinal cord injuries. A head injury is most likely to occur when a rider doesn’t wear a helmet. These types of injuries can potentially turn into a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and can lead to permanent damage if not caught in time and properly treated. Spinal cord injuries could lead to either partial or full paralysis of the rider who sustains this type of injury. Less serious, but still significant injuries are fractures, road rash, and bruising from the impact.

What Do I Do After Motorcycle Accident?
Depending on what kind of injuries you suffered in the accident, your treatment and healing timeframe could vary a great deal. You may be required to treat with physical therapy or other rehabilitation regimens to get back to where you were prior to the accident. To help with your healing process, there are a number of great support groups and websites offering assistance to those who have been involved in a motorcycle accident.

Fundraiser for Union Tunnel Worker Disabled in Motorcycle Crash

A fundraiser will be held next Saturday, April 16, at the French American Victory Club in Waltham for former union tunnel worker James Arsenault, 60, of Middleboro who suffered permanent injuries in a motorcycle accident last October. According to South Coast Today, Arsenault was out riding his motorcycle on his way to buy his wife a birthday present on Cape Cod when an 87-year-old woman hit him with her car. She was cited by police for causing the accident.

The crash broke every bone in Arsenault’s face and his pelvis broke in three difference places. He also is now blind in his right eye and suffered three fractures in one of his wrists, among many other injuries. He sustained both cervical ligament damage and carotid artery damage. In order to repair Arsenault’s severe facial injuries, surgeons had to place 50 screws and 30 plates in his face.

Arsenault also experienced some brain damage from the serious accident last fall. He goes to physical therapy during the week and extensive rehabilitation is also in the works to help Arsenault heal from his injuries. Additional surgeries may also be necessary on his road to recovery. Arsenault’s wife, Caren, stated that insurance simply can’t cover all of her husband’s medical and rehabilitative expenses.

The fundraiser will start at 6:00pm and go until 11:00pm at the club, located at 193 Elm Street. Live entertainment, food, and raffles will fill the evening for those who would like to help Arsenault and his family during this difficult time. You can buy tickets at the door the night of the fundraiser. Donations will also be accepted to the James Arsenault Fund through Rockland Trust branches.
