Once production begins on the Bimmer bikes next month, SIRIUS will become part of the standard equipment for the R 1200 RT, K 1600 GT, and the K 1600 GTL Touring Motorcycles. These motorcycles will have access to “SIRIUS Everything,” which is an exclusive introduction to the system for one year. There will be 135 channels to choose from while enjoying the ride. After the 12 months are up, owners will then be required to pay the standard pricing for the satellite radio.

BMW Motorrad Vice President Pieter de Waal stated that the BMW motorcycles with SIRIUS will soon provide “the perfect soundtrack for the perfect ride.”

The leader of the pack in motorcycle accessories for bike and biker alike, Hot Leathers, will be the official retailer and prominent sponsor once again at Laconia Motorcycle Week in New Hampshire.  The established event will run from June 11-19 and it will be Laconia’s 88th year as host of the cycle-centered gathering.

The new models are part of Harley-Davidson’s strategy to attract a wider range of bikers. With the addition of the 3 new models, Harley currently has a lineup of 32 models. Bikers with tastes ranging from traditional to urban can now find a Harley model to fit their idea of a bike.

Fellow motorcyclists having fun at the Sturgis Rally have probably had the chance to see the new bikes which were leunched just ahead of the famous annual motorcycle Sturgis event.

For the rest of us, here’s a short description of each new model.

- 2011 XR1200X

This is Harley’s best model for riders with a taste for European or Japanese motorcycles with high horsepower and sharp handling. It has features like adjustable suspension, floating front brake rotors and an Evolution Engine (also known as the Blockhead). As you can see on the photo above, the XR1200X looks like previous Harley dirt-track racers. - Road Glide Ultra

The Road Glide Ultra is designed for the long haul. It has a luggage carrier, vented fairing, anti-lock brakes cruise control and a lowers, ABS (anti-lock braking system), Twin Cam 103 engine, Harley-Davidson Smart Security System, cruise control, tri-line fender lights, and a four-speaker, 80-watt stereo. - SuperLow

The 2011 SuperLow is a great example of the authentic American motorcycle. It has a 4.5 gallon fuel tank, an 883cc Evolution engine, low-bucket seat, plus a new front-end tuned for a combination of comfort and handling that will appeal to a whole range of riders. Also, as you can see on the poster, thanks to Massachusetts helmet laws, it is the home of some of the safest riders.

There are literally thousands of motorcycle accessories for every type of motorcycle out on the market today. If you need your bike to look or perform differently, I guarantee there is a motorcycle accessory or two that can help accomplish your goal.

Personally, I don’t think certain things mix very well.  For instance, I wouldn’t suggest anyone mix steak with jelly beans or read a Dean Koontz murder mystery novel while horseback riding. Each of these items is great by themselves but together they are awful. Some things just don’t mix.

Like motorcycle and golf.

Like motorcycling, golf goes beyond a casual past time to many people who play — it is a lifestyle. The dedication, passion, and love that many golfers exhibit is equal to the dedication of bikers towards riding.

That’s why the Go Go Caddy is the worst motorcycle accessory in the world. For the life of me, I cannot fathom why a biker would want to carry a fully loaded golf bag on their bike.

Here are a few reasons why the Go Go Caddy is just plain dumb.

• Golfers own cars: Golfers who are in the primary demographics of Harley buyers are older professionals who own cars as their primary transportation.

• Harley owners own cars: Almost all Harley’s are considered luxury items and are fairly expensive. Most Harley owners are  professionals who own at least one car. It seems pretty unlikely that a Harley owning golfer would use his/her bike as primary transportation.

• It makes riding a motorcycle unsafe: This product’s website states that mounting a golf bag on the bike can cause blind spots. Any accessory that makes a bike unsafe is a bad accessory.

• It looks terrible: I don’t know why anyone would spend the money to get a beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle only to add a golf rack to it? With or without the golf bag attached, it is hideous.

Now it is and for all the right reasons.

Harley Davidson has joined the fight against breast cancer by launching its Pink Label Collection. This collection includes 12 motorcycle apparel and biker accessory items for women.

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women and the second largest cause of cancer death among women (first among Hispanic women).  Every year, nearly 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and around 40,000 women die from the disease.

What few people know is that men also can contract breast cancer. Breast cancer among women is 100 times more likely but nearly 2000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year and over 400 men will die from the disease. Celebrities like actor Richard Roundtree and former talk show host Montell Williams are both survivors of breast cancer.

Harley Davidson also recognizes that women are increasingly buying Harley Davidson motorcycles and Harley should in turn support important issues that affect women. From 2003-2007, Harley ownership among women increased by 1%. While this may seem like a small number, this trend represents a potential windfall in years to come.

In the motorcycle world, this is not the normal way of seeing things. Bigger is generally better. Bigger engines, wider tires, more horsepower, louder pipes, and more torque are all the hallmarks of motorcycle customization.

I felt the same way until recently. Lately, I noticed that there have been some small, low cost accessories that I purchased that made a huge difference to my overall comfort on my bike.

Motorcycle Rear Lowering Kits: These amazingly simple kits lowered my Street Glide 2 full inches, installed easily in under 1 hour, and cost less than $40.

Pant/Boot Clips: Sometimes when I ride, a gust of wind will literally roll my pant leg up to about my knee. Not anymore since I bought Pant/Boot clips. This is one of the best motorcycle accessories I’ve ever purchased and cost under $20

Guardian Bell: Ok, so this is not something that makes a bike perform better but it is a great thing to have. These bells, according to the legend, help to protect against evil road spirits that cause mechanical problems on the road. That’s all I needed to hear to give me a reason to buy one. I’ll spend $10 to buy some good fortune on the road.

Motorcycle Grips: I added Willie G. Skull grips to replace the ugly stock grips for my Harley. Not only do these grips look great but they perform great too. Not a bad investment at $80

Derby Cover: The Willie G. Skull chrome derby cover adds a sinister touch of style to my Street Glide. It is certainly better than the plain stock cover and was under $60.

Big customization projects are great but don’t forget about the little things. You will be surprised once you consider what you’d like to improve about your bike, talk to other bikers, and do some research.

But not all motorcycle accessories are created the same.

While some accessories are cosmetic, there are a few that are must-haves. These motorcycle accessories really improve the comfort, performance, or style of the bike. With these accessories, you cannot go wrong:

• The Butty Buddy: Most OEM motorcycle seats are not built for passenger comfort, especially for longer trips. And sometimes, you have to bring your significant other on a motorcycle road trip. The Butty Buddy is a removal seat enhancement for passengers and is even installable on chopper style bikes. Your passenger’s butt will thank you.
• HP Tools Extreme Motorcycle Tire Repair Kits: Running over a nail and getting a flat on your bike really sucks. With these kits (with a few exceptions) you can get back on the road and get to a repair shop to properly repair or replace your motorcycle tire. The kit is small enough to fit in small tool pouches too.
• Voyager Trike Conversion Kits: I’m not a big fan of trikes but these kits can turn a touring motorcycle into a stable trike at the lowest possible cost. The good thing about these conversion kits is that they do not remove the motorcycle’s rear tire and can be taken off easily.
• Rear Lowering Kits: For shorter riders, nothing makes a biker more comfortable than a rear lowering kit. These kits are under $30, can lower a bike 1-3 inches, and can be installed in less than 30 minutes. There are similar kits available for metric cruisers as well.

Depending on your riding style and your bike, these motorcycle accessories can be great for you. Make sure to do you research and ask around before you buy.
