Is Uninsured Motorist Insurance Worth It?
July 19, 2009
There are still a few bikers out there that think that Uninsured Motorist Insurance Coverage is just another product invented by the insurance industry to get rich at the expense of the average Joe. For those in states that require uninsured motorist insurance, you have no choice so get over it! For those in states without that insurance requirement you might conclude that uninsured motorist coverage is not worth the added expense. But did you consider that:
- Depending on your state, 25%-50% of all drivers on the road are uninsured or underinsured
- Depending on your state, uninsured motorists coverage is a requirement
- Even minor motorcycle accidents can cause catastrophic injuries
Still not convinced uninsured motorist coverage is for you? That’s understandable but, did you consider that according to the Federal Highway Administration in 2005 there were:
- 6,420,000 car accidents
- 42,636 fatalities in those accidents
- 2.9 million injuries from those accidents
Beginning to see the light but not all the way there yet? Here’s a bit more. Did you know that uninsured motorist coverage provides:
- Coverage for Medical Expenses
- Vehicle Coverage (not offered in all states)
- Vehicle Rental Coverage (Optional item)
Even if you have medical insurance, your coverage may not be enough for all of your medical bills. In many cases vehicle and rental coverage is available so you can be back on the road quickly.
Now you are probably thinking, what’s the catch? Uninsured Motorist Insurance must be very expensive and not worth the cost. Guess again. On average, uninsured motorist insurance costs about 10% of the total cost of your entire insurance premium.
Here are a few quick and easy steps to determine the motorcycle insurance coverage that is right for you.
- Check your existing insurance policy because you may already have coverage
- Review your health insurance plan to see what coverage you have for medical expenses
- Check with your insurance provider for uninsured motorist coverage options that suits your needs
- Determine if the additional cost is worth the potential benefits
