Manslaughter charges filed after biker couple killed
August 24, 2009

A West Newbury, Massachusetts, man will face criminal charges after striking and killing a couple riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle June 25.

Alan Pearsall, 42, was driving a Toyota Rav4 when he struck Earl and Maryella Morris on their 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Bachelor Street in West Newbury. Mr. Morris was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife was airlifted to a Boston-area hospital where she died from her injuries.

Pearsall has stated that he crossed over into the lane the Morrises were traveling in to avoid a bicyclist in his lane. He reportedly struck the Morrises head-on, causing the couple to suffer extensive injuries, though they were both wearing helmets. According to accident investigators, Mr. Morris may have attempted to lay down his bike on its left side to avoid a catastrophic collision with Pearsall’s car.

Alan Pearsall, owner of Pearsall Art & Design, will be arraigned September 8 on two counts of vehicular homicide, marked lanes violation, and failure to drive in the right lane of the road.
