Massachusetts Motorcycle Association parade cancelled
August 31, 2009

The Massachusetts Motorcycle Association’s (MMA) “First Annual Bristol County Pig Roast and Motorcycle Ride” scheduled to take place in Bristol County this past Saturday was cancelled.

According to the Taunton Gazette, representatives of the MMA met with members of the Taunton Police Department last week to discuss an application for a permit for the group’s parade. The acting police chief denied the permit, citing the length of the parade route (21.7 miles) and a loophole in the state’s law which allows motorcycle riders in parade the option to forego a helmet, which is normally required of riders in Massachusetts.

The group had originally planned a parade of 100 riders through 21.7 miles of the city in hopes of increasing awareness for their group in the Bristol County community. The parade was going to end near the Lafayette Club on Lakeside Avenue, where a pig roast was scheduled to be held.

A representative from the group reportedly has a tentative alternate plan for a 10 mile parade route and a police officer for the event, hired by the MMA.
