July 28, 2010
A tragic motorcycle accident that happened in Methuen, Massachusetts last night ended with two people killed and one other injured.

The accident happened near the Dracut line on Route 110 near 68 Lowell Boulevard in Methuen, police said.
One of the motorcyclists who died in the crash, Matthew Phillips, 35, of Wilmington, was traveling westbound on Rt-110 on his 1989 Suzuki when his motorcycle crossed into the oposite lane and crashed into a red Honda Civic and two motorcycles traveling behind it, only narrowly missing a collision with a third motorcycle, the Boston Herald reported.
Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 30-year-old motorcyclist from Lawrence, Mass. was also killed in the accident. Alberto Binet, 30, was pronounced dead at the hospital (Saints Memorial Medical Center in Lowell). One other motorcyclist, currently unnamed, which was also involved in the accident sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene, police said.
According to witnesses, Phillips was driving erractically, passing other vehicles and speeding before crashing into the vehicles.
“At some point, the Suzuki left the westbound lane and proceeded into the eastbound lane, colliding with a red Honda Civic, narrowly missing one motorcycle, and then colliding with two additional motorcycles which were traveling eastbound behind the Honda Civic,” the police press release said.
The accident is still under police investigation.
News reports noted that the section of Route 110 between Methuen and Dracut has a certain notoriety as a site of numerous accidents in the past.
Also, the last few days have been particularly deadly when it comes to motorcycle accidents. Summers are always the high season of motorcycle fatality reports before the cold weather scares bikers off the road. But every new report of someone being killed in an accident involving motorcycles or motor vehicles is always sad. In this case, our hearts and prayers go out to the families of both Alberto Binet and Matthew Phillips.
