Ride with a Clear Head
December 3, 2009

I am certainly guilty of riding a motorcycle to clear my mind. When I have life’s troubles on my mind, I hop on my motorcycle and go for a nice long ride. Without fail, the ride takes my troubles away. Some people buy a motorcycle for their therapeutic effect.

I’m sure many other riders do the same thing. Just like them, I am making a critical mistake.

Motorcycles require concentration in order to operate them and respond quickly to changing conditions on the road. A nice motorcycle ride on a Harley or sport bike is always a great way to clear your mind but not a good way to clear a preoccupied and distracted mind.

My strong suggestion is to wait until you are in a calm and focused frame of mind so that your primary concentration is on the motorcycle and the road. Concentrating on anything else while riding could prove to be fatal.

If you have to ride while you are preoccupied with other things, make sure to ride as safely as possible. Stick to roads that you are familiar with and make sure to ride alone. Make sure your motorcycle therapy ends on a positive note.
