Sign of the Times: Harley-Davidson to Shut Down Buell, Sell MV Agusta
October 22, 2009
If you haven’t already heard the news, Harley Davidson has announced plans to shut down Buell and sell MV Agusta.
Buell is a beloved American sportbike, as Jason Fogelson of Best Western’s “You Must Be Trippin’” travel blog recently noted. News of its demise was received as a shock: read Basem Wasef’s About.com guide to Motorcycles.
Harley-Davidson acquired Buell in 1998. It acquired MV Agusta, an Italian sportbike manufacturer, in 2008.
According to a press release, “worldwide retail sales of new Harley-Davidson motorcycles declined 21.3 percent in the third quarter compared to last year’s third quarter.” Although this represents “an improvement from the 30.1 percent decline in this year’s second quarter,” it does not bode well.
Overall, Harley-Davidson has been hit by an “84.1 percent decline in net income.”
