Robert Blais was allegedly driving drunk when he had a motorcycle accident near Routes 101 and 114 in Bedford, NH.

Last Thursday, 27-year-old motorcyclist Robert Blais was allegedly driving drunk when he crashed near Routes 101 and 114 in Bedford, NH.

Blais, of Manchester, had driven off the road and, luckily, another driver noticed his motorcycle lights on in the wooded area and called police a little after 2:00am.

Police responded to the scene and discovered that Blais had sustained several serious injuries as a result of being thrown off of his motorcycle. It was reported that Blais did have his helmet on. Emergency responders transported Blais to a local hospital and then by air to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

William Boucher of Manchester NH was injured after he crashed his motorcycle trying to flee police.

A Manchester motorcyclist was hospitalized on Sunday afternoon after he tried to outrun police and crashed at the intersection of Laxson Avenue and Edouard Street in Manchester, NH, WMUR reports.

According to the authorities, police tried to pull over the motorcyclist for a routine traffic violation close to the intersection of South Willow Street and Laxson Avenue, but instead he accelerated east on Laxson Avenue and got out of sight. Police then got a report about a motorcycle accident at Laxson Ave and Edouard St involving the man.

Police identified him as William Boucher, 24. Boucher was found pinned under a vehicle in a driveway after his motorycle crashed into parked cars, police said. He sustained injury and is treated at Elliot Hospital, where he is listed in a serious condition. Although a helmet was found at the scene, it is not yet sure whether Boucher was wearing it at the time of the accident.

No charges have been filed yet. The incident is still under investigation, the Union Leader reports.

Joseph P. Catalono was injured in a motorcycle accident on Route 4 also involving two cars and another motorcycle.

The sunny weather this weekend lured many motorcycle enthusiasts outdoors to enjoy what may be the last warm days before the cold weather takes over.

However, accidents happen even when the weather is nice, and some motorcyclists were involved in crashes resulting either in death or serious injury.

A Franklin man, Dennis Taft, lost his life in a single-motorcycle accident on Route 11 in Andover, NH on Saturday, while the same day another motorcyclist suffered injury in a multi-vehicle crash involving two cars and two motorcycles.

Police said, Joseph P. Catalano, 23, of Albany, NY who was riding a 2006 Harley Davidson on Route 4 in Hampton with his father (who was on a 1990 Harley Davidson), was injured when he was struck by a car.

The car, driven by Ethan R. Marshall, 20, of Burlington, VT was going north on Rt-4 when it rear-ended a stopped vehicle that was attempting a left turn near near Finius T. Flubberbusters. The car then crashed with Catalono’s motorcycle, and caused his father’s motorcycle to skid 100 feet, police said.

Catalano sustained serious right leg trauma and was transported to a Castleton hospital and then airlifted to Lebanon, NH, where he was reported in a stable condition on Sunday afternoon, news reports said.

His father, Joseph Catalano, sustained road rash on his right hand and arm. The stopped vehicle, driven by Charles W. Hannum, 52, of Fredonia, had three passengers, but no one was injured.

Marshall’s airbags deployed and he was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center with a bloody nose. He told the police he took his eyes off the road for a second, and when he looked up he was unable to stop and swerved to the left to avoid the stopped vehicle in front of him.

Marshall received traffic tickets for following too closely and for failing to stay within the designated traffic lane.

Reginald Silva of Plymouth was injured in a motorcycle car collision with a Nissan driven by Michael Warren of Taunton, Massachusetts.

A Plymouth motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash Thursday afternoon after colliding with a car at the intersection of Main Street and Forest Avenue in Brockton, Massachusetts.

The accident involved a car, a 2005 Nissan, traveling on Forest Avenue which stopped at a stop sign and made a left turn, coming into the path of a motorcycle. The car then struck the gray Suzuki motorcycle, pinning the motorcyclist under the car.

The car driver, a 23-year-old Taunton man, Michael Warren, will be cited for failure to yield and operating a car with a suspended driver’s license, police said.

The victim in the crash, Reginald Silva, 23, of Plymouth, was transported to Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital then transferred to New England Medical Center in Boston for treatment.

According to police, Silva suffered a serious leg injury as a result of the crash.

The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. One of the rescuers at the scene, Fire Capt. Richard Costa said “He was alert and he was a trooper,” EnterpriseNews reports.

Motorcyclists usually face many potential hazards on the road: curvy narrow country roads, collisions with wild life, uneven road surfaces, and more; but no hazard poses a greater danger to a motorcyclist’s life than other traffic.

The Hurt Study, which was published as a groundbreaking study of motorcycle accidents in 1981, found that 3/4 of motorcycle crashes involved a collision with another vehicle.

The Fatality Analisys Reporting System (FARS) data show that in 2008 there were 5,409 motorcycles involved in fatal crashes in the USA, or roughly 10.7% of all vehicle crashes resulting in victim fatalities.

About 6.1% off all fatal accidents (including 2,630 vehicles of all types) were a result of an operator making a Left Turn. These numbers show that the added risk of collision to drivers and motorcyclists when they attempt to make a left turn should urge everyone to be extra cautious when performing this maneuver.

Alexander Atkinson of Groton Massachusetts was in a serious motorcycle accident in Thompson CT suffering a head injury.

Quaddick Town Farm Rd, Thompson CT

Another serious motorcycle accident happened over the weekend in New England. On Friday, a 49-year-old Massachusetts man suffered head injury in a motorcycle accident on Quaddick Town Farm Road in Thompson, CT.

Alexander Atkinson, of Groton, MA, who was not wearing a helmet, was listed in serious condition Saturday at a Massachusetts hospital.

The accident happened when Atkinson, who was riding south on Quaddick Town Farm Road with a motorcycle group, tried to avoid hitting a fellow rider who had apparently stopped on the road. Atkinson lost control of his bike and crashed.

According to the authorities, Atkinson braked hard to avoid collision and laid his bike on its side. He was tossed from the bike in the crash suffering serious injury.

At first Atkinson was taken to Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT, but was then transported to the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA, for treatment of serious head trauma.

This is another sober reminder to other motorcyclists to wear helmets. Another motorcycle accident which happened last week involved two NH motorcyclists, a husband and a wife, who were not wearing helmets either. The woman suffered fatal head injury and died later in the week.

Motorcycle helmets are designed to protect from severe head injury, and though not all US states require their use, riders’ common sense should guide them to wear helmets when going on the road.

We hope Alexander Atkinson will soon recover from his injuries in this unfortunate accident.

Peter Valach and Ryan Willoughby were injured in a motorcycle crash on Martha's Vineyard on Monday.

A Martha’s Vineyard motorcyclist was seriously injured in an accident on Barnes Road (also known as Airport Road) in Edgartown on Monday.

News reports said the injured motorcyclist was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following the accident which happened near the entrance to the Airport Mobil Station on Barnes Road in Edgartown.

Local police said Petr Valach, 24, of Tisbury, was speeding when he hit Ryan Willoughby, 20, of Vineyard Haven, who was pulled over to the side of the road on his motorcycle and was turning around when he got hit by Valach.

According to witness accounts Valach was allegedly going at a speed of 120 miles per hour.

The impact threw Valach from his motorcycle, which also crashed into a tree splitting it in two. Valach was found about 575 feet away in a serious condition.

Willoughby’s motorcycle was totaled, too, and he suffered hand injuries.

Both men were injured and taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. While Willoughby was treated for hand injuries, Valach’s injuries required for him to be airlifted to MGH, the Martha’s Vineyard Gazette reported. An MGH spokesperson said that Valach was in a good condition last night.

The accident is under investigation.

Pascual Sanchez of Methuen, Massachusetts got injured during a motorcycle tribute ride in honor of two Bridgeport firefighters who died last month in the line of duty.

A Methuen, Massachusetts man was injured last Sunday when he crashed his motorcycle during a charity tribute ride for the two Bridgeport firefighters who were killed in the line of duty last month.

The motorcyclist, Pascual Sanchez, 38, was allegedly trying to avoid a car that pulled into his path near the Hattertown Road intersection on Route 302 in Newtown CT just before 1 pm, NewsTimes reported.

According to police, the motor vehicle driver, Carol Rowe, 50, of Newtown, tried to pull out and thought he saw “a break in the line of motorcycles.” Sgt. Richard Robinson said, “There was no contact between the vehicles.”

Sanchez was injured and received treatment at Danbury Hospital. He was discharged several hours later.

Rowe was cited for several motor vehicle infractions, including a stop sign violation, driving in the improper lane and improper passing.

It is not yet clear whether Sanches was a participant of the 10th Annual Connecticut Ride United motorcycle ride which is sponsored by the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut. The 60-mile ride is held annually to commemorate September 11.

This year’s ride was dedicated to Lt. Steven Velasquez and Michael Baik, who were killed while fighting a fire in July.
