Robert Blais was allegedly driving drunk when he had a motorcycle accident near Routes 101 and 114 in Bedford, NH.

Last Thursday, 27-year-old motorcyclist Robert Blais was allegedly driving drunk when he crashed near Routes 101 and 114 in Bedford, NH.

Blais, of Manchester, had driven off the road and, luckily, another driver noticed his motorcycle lights on in the wooded area and called police a little after 2:00am.

Police responded to the scene and discovered that Blais had sustained several serious injuries as a result of being thrown off of his motorcycle. It was reported that Blais did have his helmet on. Emergency responders transported Blais to a local hospital and then by air to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.

Police are continuing to investigate the crash.

Peter Valach and Ryan Willoughby were injured in a motorcycle crash on Martha's Vineyard on Monday.

A Martha’s Vineyard motorcyclist was seriously injured in an accident on Barnes Road (also known as Airport Road) in Edgartown on Monday.

News reports said the injured motorcyclist was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following the accident which happened near the entrance to the Airport Mobil Station on Barnes Road in Edgartown.

Local police said Petr Valach, 24, of Tisbury, was speeding when he hit Ryan Willoughby, 20, of Vineyard Haven, who was pulled over to the side of the road on his motorcycle and was turning around when he got hit by Valach.

According to witness accounts Valach was allegedly going at a speed of 120 miles per hour.

The impact threw Valach from his motorcycle, which also crashed into a tree splitting it in two. Valach was found about 575 feet away in a serious condition.

Willoughby’s motorcycle was totaled, too, and he suffered hand injuries.

Both men were injured and taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. While Willoughby was treated for hand injuries, Valach’s injuries required for him to be airlifted to MGH, the Martha’s Vineyard Gazette reported. An MGH spokesperson said that Valach was in a good condition last night.

The accident is under investigation.

Pascual Sanchez of Methuen, Massachusetts got injured during a motorcycle tribute ride in honor of two Bridgeport firefighters who died last month in the line of duty.

A Methuen, Massachusetts man was injured last Sunday when he crashed his motorcycle during a charity tribute ride for the two Bridgeport firefighters who were killed in the line of duty last month.

The motorcyclist, Pascual Sanchez, 38, was allegedly trying to avoid a car that pulled into his path near the Hattertown Road intersection on Route 302 in Newtown CT just before 1 pm, NewsTimes reported.

According to police, the motor vehicle driver, Carol Rowe, 50, of Newtown, tried to pull out and thought he saw “a break in the line of motorcycles.” Sgt. Richard Robinson said, “There was no contact between the vehicles.”

Sanchez was injured and received treatment at Danbury Hospital. He was discharged several hours later.

Rowe was cited for several motor vehicle infractions, including a stop sign violation, driving in the improper lane and improper passing.

It is not yet clear whether Sanches was a participant of the 10th Annual Connecticut Ride United motorcycle ride which is sponsored by the Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters Association of Connecticut. The 60-mile ride is held annually to commemorate September 11.

This year’s ride was dedicated to Lt. Steven Velasquez and Michael Baik, who were killed while fighting a fire in July.

Another Massachusetts biker was injured in a car-motorcycle accident the last 7 days. Thomas Misuraca, of Gloucester, was struck by Ann Walker, of Beverly, as she was pulling out of her driveway.

Another Massachusetts biker was injured in a car-motorcycle accident the last 7 days. We mentioned the first motorcycle victim, Mark Karli, who suffered serious injuries (including a head injury) in our previous post.

The second serious motorcycle victim sustained injuries in a motorcycle accident that occurred in Beverly, Mass. on Tuesday. The injured biker, Thomas Misuraca, of Gloucester, was struck by a car driven by Ann Walker, 65, of Beverly, as she was pulling out of her driveway on 566 Hale Street.

She did not see the biker as a trailer parked along the side of the road obscured her view, police said. The trailer’s owners put it there for sale, the Gloucester Times reported.

Misuraca was conscious and alert after the crash, but police said he sustained serious injuries. He was airlifted by a MedFlight helicopter to a hospital, where he was listed in a “good” condition yesterday after his surgery on Wednesday.

Walker was cited for failure to yield, while the police are still investigating the crash.

In the meantime Misuraca’s condition is expected to improve. We hope he will heal quickly and completely.

As in the previous post, this motorcyclist also suffered in a crash because the driver did not see him. Drivers who do not expect to encounter motorcyclists on the roads in summertime, especially as there are so many motorcycle events going on all over the US, should really open their eyes and stay alert. Soon enough, the seasons will change and once again there will only be cars and trucks on the roads.

October 28, 2009 – Malden, Ma -Eric Fraser, a 38-year-old biker, was seriously injured and an unidentified biker was killed in a motorcycle accident on Sunday in Malden, Massachusetts.

The motorcycle accident took place as Fraser and a friend were riding their motorcycles on Highland Ave and attempting to go around a curve when they reportedly lost control of their bikes, according to reports on WHDH Channel 7 News in Boston. The second biker died at the scene of the accident. Police are still investigating the motorcycle crash and are unsure what caused the motorcycle accident to occur.

Eric Fraser has already been in the media spotlight this year. Fraser’s ex-wife, Kristin Labrie is facing up to 40 in prison for attempted murder in connection to the death of Fraser’s son, Jeremy Fraser, after Labrie allegedly withheld the 9-year-old’s cancer treatments. Jeremy Fisher died in March of this year.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Fraser family as well as the family of the second biker who died in the motorcycle accident.

An alarming rate of motorcycle crashes take place at night. Bikers can take extra precautions when riding in the dark to minimize the risk of an accident.

Riders should conduct a thorough check of both their headlights and brake lights before setting out. Reflective clothing featuring shiny decals and reflective strips are also a great way to increase visibility. Finally, riders should have a heightened level of awareness, as drivers are much more likely to be fatigued at night.

These measures act as added insurance for riders and prevent countless motorcycle injuries and motorcycle accidents every year.

There is no single rule for motorcyclists to follow to avoid becoming just another motorcycle fatality on the highways; to the contrary, riders need to learn to adopt and implement a wide variety of safety measures, and doing so means earnest studying and exhibiting perseverance.

The road to improved motorcycle safety throughout the country is a difficult one Not only do riders themselves need to study all the requisite safety measures, but in a broader sense it is society’s responsibility to develop some sort of plan to make roads safer for bikes, thereby reducing the number of motorcycle accidents and motorcycle injuries.

Fortunately, such a plan has been formulated by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program, and will gradually be implemented, contemplating such factors as designing highway off-ramps and other parts of the roadway to meet motorcycles’ needs and abilities. The hope is that eventually these changes will lead to a drastically reduced number of motorcycle crashes each year.

Though it would seem like riding a motorcycle is pretty basic once you understand how the bike runs (steering, braking, etc), there are a lot of safety precautions that motorcyclists need to bear in mind when they ride.

Unfortunately, not all riders are aware of the principles for safer riding, which has led to recent motorcycle awareness programs sponsored at the state and federal levels to inform motorcyclists about potential dangers and the best techniques for preventing motorcycle accidents.

Yet no matter how thorough an awareness campaign is, in the end it is the responsibility of the individual rider to learn and incorporate safer riding methods to protect themselves on the road.

An alarming rate of motorcycle crashes occur simply because other drivers did not see the motorcyclist approaching or driving alongside them. All riders need to be aware of these common visibility problems and adjust their driving techniques to make sure their bike stands out on the road, especially when driving at night.

Riders can increase their visibility by using their headlights both at night and during daylight hours to help make other drivers aware of their presence.

Motorcycle riders can also make themselves more visible to motorists by wearing protective clothing and helmets with reflective strips or decals that will draw drivers’ eyes.

When choosing an appropriate position on the road, remember that motorcycles are small in comparison with other vehicles and motorcyclists should avoid entering other vehicles’ blind spots. Using additional measures such as tapping the brakes to activate your brake lights or using your horn can notify drivers that you are nearby and can help prevent possibly fatal collisions.

The Biker’s Dress Code

Protective gear is a rider’s best friend, and in the unfortunate cases where motorcycle crashes do occur the resulting injuries are usually far less serious if the person involved was properly dressed to ride.

The first place to start is your head. Riders can protect themselves by using a certified helmet (in the right size) and eye protection (full-face helmets have this built in). Choosing a helmet in a light color, such as white, has been proven to increase other people’s awareness of a motorcyclist’s position.

Use thick clothing to protect the other parts of your body. Leather is a favorite choice of motorcyclists all over the world because it has the thickness and durability needed to minimize potential motorcycle injuries during a crash. Wearing sturdy boots that protect your ankles are another important piece of safety gear that can help protect riders out on the road.

Having the Right Mindset

In addition to all the safety measures outlined above, riders should make sure that they have the right mindset while cruising on the open road. Some motorcycle injuries are ultimately the result of aggressive biker attitudes which can result in high risk maneuvers or poor driving decisions that can increase the risk for a collision.

There is no room for distraction when it comes to avoiding motorcycle injury. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends using their “SEE” strategy (referring to three steps: search, evaluate, and execute) to help motorcyclists navigate the road safely.

Riders should remember to always err on the side of caution, and adopt motorcycle safety strategies that can help them enjoy their time on the road. By incorporating protective gear and other riding techniques that increase their visibility, motorcyclists will be much less likely to end up as another unfortunate fatality in the news.
