“When in Town, Throttle Down”
July 29, 2010
This is the new motto promoted in a recent Massachusetts Motorcycle Association (MMA) pamphlet aimed at helping motorcycle riders avoid fines for loud pipes due the new motorcycle noise ordinance in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts bikers know that the MMA has been fighting noise ordinances in Massachusetts cities and towns for years. However, the noise issue has escalated with the increase in the number of motorcycles on the road every year, so it is no wonder legal efforts have been made to deal with it.
However, MMA’s take on this issue is “Education, not Legislation.”
The goal of MMA’s new campaign is to share knowledge on why people are complaining about motorcycle noise, and what the actual Massachusetts Law which went into effect on July 12 is. Another goal of the campaign is to raise awareness among riders to respect residential areas by keeping their throttles down.
Remember, “”When in Town, Throttle Down.”

Even though I’m a rider, I am also a residential inhabitant that hates loud pipes at any hour of the day.
Now that my own “pipes” are coming up on the end of their expected life span, I am thoroughly amazed at how expensive EPA stamped pipes are (since EPA stamped pipes are only made by the bike manufacturers). I could get loud, straight, pipes for pennies compared to trying to stay legal. There is NO aftermarket EPA stamped pipes that I can find.
Maybe this is why there is so much noise?? Motorcycles need a Midas muffler shop!
